History of the Club

Original Pegasus Bookplate

The Cosmopolitan Club was founded in 1909 as a private women's club serving members and their guests as well as members of reciprocal clubs in the U.S. and abroad. The original purpose of the Club was to provide teachers and governesses with a weekend meeting place. Over the years the Club became a community of accomplished professionals who gathered to attend lectures and classes and to enjoy dining, social and cultural events.

The Club stands in the heart of the Upper East Side Historical District. The distinctive Regency Revival Clubhouse, with its elegant Regency and Art Deco Interior, was designed by the architect Thomas Harlan Ellett. The cornerstone was laid on May 19, 1932 on the site of a former stable.
